THE SYSTEM OF DISCIPLINES

As the largest university in the field of metallurgy in Northeast China, Northeast University takes the task of training intellectuals of many specialties. While it places major emphasis on the education of undergraduate and graduate students, the University is responsible for the education of non-degree and adult students and for the continuing education of technical personnel and administrators . Its service is directed to the nation and community . The educational system of different levels and numerous orientations has been formed.

Together with china's reform of the educational system and the resumption if its original name, NEU has gradually built up a management system of three levels of administration and operation of education: university, schools and departments . This new management system has injected energy into the University.

A great effort has been placed on the construction of programs and disciplines , which have led to the development of related disciplines . Currently, four main discipline groups gave been formed : resource environment, metallurgical materials , mechanical engineering and computer and automation . The comprehensive power of these disciplines ranks highly with other universities of its kind in the nation . Several of these disciplines were first begun at Northeastern University, which contributed greatly to their development. In the past few years the following system of disciplines has been formed : outstanding in engineering and integration of physical sciences , engineering , humanities , law , commerce and management , added by the emerging disciplines of bioengineering, business administration and economic law .

THE GRADUATE SCHOOL

NEU graduate education started in 1942. It enrolled the first group of graduate students in 1952 after New China was founded. Since the nation began to practice an academic degree system in 1978, the University's graduate education has rapidly developed. At present there are 23 doctoral programs, 50 master's degree programs and five post-doctoral circulating stations with 87 doctoral candidate advisers. The enrollment of master's degree and doctoral candidates includes planned and non-planned enrollment (both self-sponsored and enterprise entrusted students). Exceptional undergraduate students are offered the opportunity of becoming master's degree candidates without taking the examination, as well as continuous completion of master's and doctoral degrees. Excellent master's degree candidates are allowed to advance to the study for a doctoral degree. In order to educate high quality students, some additional systems are practiced such as " midsessional selection" ,"scholarship" , " grading of master's degree dissertation" and "doctoral teaching assistantship"

NEU is one of the first universities which allow in-the-job faculty to work toward master's and doctoral degrees. In recent years, a new sys has been implemented so that experienced employees can study for master's degrees. The Graduate School has set up several graduate student training bases in the following areas: northwest China, Baoshan Steel Group in Shanghai, Benxi Steel Company in Liaoning and Qinhuangdao City in Huber Province. It has established the relationship of exchange and cooperative training of doctoral candidates with the U.S., Japan, U.K., France, Germany, Finland, Sweden, Italy and Australia.
