Northeastern University attaches great importance to international exchange. Since 1987, international exchanges have been conducted at different levels, through various channels, in different forms and in various orientations. NEU has set up inter-university relations of academic exchange with 48 universities and research institutions from sixteen countries and regions, including the US, Japan, Australia, Germany, UK, France, Sweden, Russia, Canada, Italy and the Republic of Korea. The University maintains frequent contacts with other academic institutions and professors in 20 countries. One thousand eight hundred and sixty-six faculty members have been sent abroad to give lectures, participate in conferences, visit and do advanced studies. Six hundred and eighty-four people have been sent abroad for degree studies. Tow thousand sic hundred and thirty-one foreign experts have been invited to the University for lectures, cooperative research and other academic activities. Seventy-five will-known experts and scholars, from foreign countries, Hong Kong and Taiwan, have been invited as either NEU honorary or concurrent professors. In recent years, 22 large international conferences have been organized. NEU has set up long-term relations of exchanging academic periodicals with 230 foreign university or nation¡¯s libraries. In addition, the University has set up the Sino-American Training Center. The American side sends tutors and provides modern teaching facilities. The center is to train professionals for China¡¯s metallurgical field and Northeast China Region.
Since 1954, the University has trained over 240 foreign students. The current enrollment of 64 foreign students includes undergraduate, master¡¯s degree, doctorate and post-doctoral students.
